Make a paper garland for a birthday

Create a light, readable decoration and attach it without making the wall an afterthought.

Choose its position and length

Decide where the garland will be seen: behind a table, above a shelf or on a clear wall. Measure the available width and leave space at both ends. Check that it will not obstruct doors, lighting or ventilation. Keep it away from flames and heat sources.

In a small room, a few well-spaced flags may read better than a long phrase with crowded letters. Decide whether the garland needs a message or only shapes. Check a person's name before cutting letters; discovering a missing letter after assembly is avoidable. Plan the whole sequence on paper so spacing includes spaces between words.

Make one template

Use spare card to draw a repeatable shape such as a triangle or a rectangle with a notch. Fold a sample in half if symmetry matters to you. A template avoids measuring every piece, although slight variations can also be part of the design.

Choose two or three colours that stand out against the wall. Letters need contrast with their background and sufficient size to read across the room. Test one flag in its intended position before making the full set. Fine patterns visible on the worktable may disappear at a distance, while a plain shape can remain clear.

Use straightforward connections

Make two holes near the upper edge of each piece, leaving enough paper around them to resist tearing. Thread a light cord through and arrange spacing on the table. Alternatively, fold a tab over the cord and glue according to the product instructions. Let it dry fully before hanging.

When children help, use age-appropriate scissors and punches and keep cord away from the youngest participants. Long loops must not become something to play with around the neck. An adult should handle high fixings using stable access, never standing on a wheeled chair. Completing the paper pieces and installing them are separate tasks with different requirements.

Check the fixing and plan storage

Use fixings suited to the surface and weight, following manufacturer instructions. Test an inconspicuous area if adhesive could damage paint. Even a light decoration can fall or remove a surface coating when the attachment is unsuitable. Keep the garland away from routes where it might be caught or pulled.

Afterwards, remove attachments as directed rather than tugging the cord. Wind the cord around card and store flags flat. Make numbers or names on separate pieces if you want to reuse the decoration. Then the message can change without remaking every shape or storing something that no longer suits another occasion. Label the envelope with its length so the next installation begins with a useful measurement.
