Assemble a miniature dried-flower bouquet

Use a few stems and protect the most brittle parts.

Choose a few completely dry stems in good condition. You can use purchased dried flowers or properly prepared plants whose source you know. Reject damp, mouldy material or pieces that fall apart at the slightest touch. Dried flowers are not automatically suitable for every household: keep inappropriate species out of children's and animals' reach.

Prepare a clear surface, a soft tie and a tool suited to shortening the stems. Protect the table from small fragments. A miniature bouquet needs little material: one leading stem, two or three secondary pieces and a little foliage may be enough. Starting small makes balance easier to judge and reduces unnecessary handling of fragile flowers.

Assemble without squeezing flowers

Hold stems near their lower ends and place the main element slightly higher. Add the others around it at varied heights instead of lining up every flower head. Turn the group gently to inspect its silhouette. Do not grasp the flowers themselves to move them, because petals may detach.

When you like the shape, tie the stems securely without crushing them. Trim the ends to suit the intended vase or wrapping. If a stem breaks, shorten the arrangement or remove it; hiding the break under a tight knot will not make it strong. Keep cut fragments separate so they do not become tangled in the finished bouquet.

Stand the bouquet in a small stable container without water, away from damp, direct sun and heat sources. Dry plants are flammable: do not use them around a candle or burner. For a gift, lightweight paper can protect flower heads in transit without compressing them.

Remove dust only with a very gentle method suited to the bouquet's fragility, without wetting it. If it sheds heavily or changes condition, replace the selection instead of trying to preserve it at any cost. The miniature format lets you use a few remaining stems without making every bouquet a permanent object that occupies the home for years. Keep the display small enough to move safely when cleaning its surface.
