When there is no room for a bedside table

Keep essentials within reach when the bed already fills most of the room.

What needs to stay beside you

Start by removing anything you have not used for several nights. A current book, glasses and an alarm clock need less room than a collection of books, products and cables. Distinguish what must be reachable from bed from what could stay in a chest of drawers. This small selection tells you how deep a replacement surface really needs to be.

A narrow shelf, a fabric organiser designed for a bed or the edge of existing furniture can replace a table. Always check the compatibility and load limit of anything attached to the bed frame. An accessory that slides when you pick up a book is unsuitable. Avoid unstable stacks of crates, especially beside a child or a frequently used route through the room.

Choose for your home

If you rent, check before drilling. An adhesive fixing is not automatically damage-free: its performance depends on the wall finish and the product instructions. Never put heavy or breakable objects above your head on an uncertain support. A small freestanding trolley might be more appropriate if it does not obstruct a door or the route around the bed.

A clip-on lamp saves surface space, provided its clamp is intended for the support's thickness. Aim the light at the book and check that its cable does not pull tight when the bed moves. Keep charging devices on a suitable clear surface, never trapped beneath pillows or inside bedding. The manufacturer's recommendations take priority over a neat-looking arrangement.

A shared bed can involve two different needs. One person may read every evening while the other only wants somewhere for glasses. The two sides therefore do not have to receive identical furniture. A small shelf on one side and a fabric organiser on the other may fit better if each is stable and appropriate. Visual symmetry is not a functional requirement, and a matching pair can sometimes create two unnecessary obstacles.

Consider cleaning as well: can you reach around the bed and behind the support? Very narrow furniture that is difficult to move can make maintenance awkward. If choosing a wheeled trolley, check that it stays still during use and remains stable when you take an object. Wheels should not turn an expected support into a surface that moves away beneath your hand at night.

Test it after dark

Lie down and try reaching your glasses without having to sit up abruptly. Then get out of bed as you would during the night. The support should not catch your clothes or project into the path of your feet. A corner that seems discreet in daylight may become awkward in a dark bedroom.

For drinking water, choose a genuinely stable surface well away from electrical devices. If you chose a fabric pocket, reserve it for dry objects. After a few days, remove accessories you do not use. The aim is to simplify the space beside the bed, not to squeeze the entire contents of a bedside table into a smaller container.
