Check the space before adding cushions
Use a balcony or terrace whose permitted use and capacity suit your arrangement. Keep the doorway, drainage points and access routes clear. Never put furniture, crates or stacked cushions beside a railing, where they could become steps, especially for children. Being outside does not reduce the need for supervision.
A camp can consist of a suitable mat, two cushions and a basket of books. There is no need to suspend a sheet or erect a tent. Wind can lift fabric, and improvised attachments are not reliable. Use only equipment intended for outdoor use and already installed safely. If the space cannot accommodate the activity comfortably, move it indoors beside an open view instead.
Give each object a purpose
Choose something to sit on, a stable place for a closed water bottle and a small container for pencils or cards. Keep lightweight objects under control so they cannot fall into neighbouring spaces. Avoid candles, camping stoves and heaters: a daytime corner does not need to recreate every feature of a campsite.
Prepare one short activity: read quietly, draw the view from the terrace or invent a map of an imaginary place. In a group, leave everyone enough room to sit without leaning against the railing. A small area supports fewer simultaneous activities, so change what you are doing rather than continually adding equipment.
Pack away before the weather decides
Watch the sun, wind and temperature, and go inside when the space becomes uncomfortable. Somewhere shaded in the morning may be strongly exposed soon afterwards. Children should always be able to reach the interior easily without stepping over obstacles or fragile objects.
Shake out and store textiles afterwards, retrieve small items and check that nothing has entered a drainage opening. Do not leave the arrangement outside unless the items are designed to remain there. Keep the book basket ready for another day if you like. The interest comes from temporarily using a familiar space differently, not from making it resemble a holiday photograph.
